This past May, I had the opportunity to participate in Howard University's Swahili Summer Abroad (HUSSA) program. I spent two weeks in Kisiwani, a village 8 hours from Dar es Salaam, and one week traveling throughout Kenya. In Kisiwani, we took classes while immersing ourselves in the culture and language. The kids were full of energy and waited for us to come outside everyday. Being in Africa was such a liberating experience, because I was able to form my own opinion and discover the beauties of East Africa. I saw lions, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, and more. Hopefully, I will return in the future but in the meantime I met some great people, ate good food and fulfilled a dream of mine.
Sincerely,
